What is E-Waste, It's Challenges and How Can We Deal With It?
E-waste is electronic waste that is generated by electronics
devices such as computer accessories, televisions, VCRs, stereos, printers, fax
machine, data cable, and the list will continue so on hence contributing to the
garbage. Clearly it is freely applied to consumer and business electronic
devices and equipment that is near or almost to the end of their useful life.
No clear cut definition be released for instance whether microwave oven and
other similar appliances should be category under the term or not. Sometimes it
is considered to be hazardous as certain components contains material which is
hazardous for example cathode ray tube from television and monitors. As per the
last year report from Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) it was concluded
more than four million tons of e-waste go to U.S. landfills each year.
Challenges
being faced by e-waste The mantra of reduce, reuse and recycle was specially
designed for the electronic waste. In the year 2014, Globally 41.8 million
metric tons of electronics and other conducted report by universities says that
only 16 percent of electronics were recycled officially. The e-waste which is
not getting recycled is collected by individuals and other private companies
depict that it enters the secondary market for used electronics, thrown in the
trash or sent to the landfill. It was also concluded most of the waste is
produced by USA and China that combined will contribute to one third of global
waste stream.
In case
e-waste is ended up in landfills that leads to lot of toxics such as mercury,
cadmium and lead. We are simply throwing away the devices, electronics and
gadgets to its recycle we are least concern as we don't know what can be done
with how can each personality use it again. There aren't enough of recyclers in
the market that can actually help in the process of getting the e-waste
recycled and reused by commoners. E-waste is Global problem it's been overseas
where it is burned in junkyards. Globally the use of electronic is increasing
which will lead to more of waste generation and reuse is very little.
How can we
deal with challenges? As mentioned by me recycling of the waste is very little
as compared to the consumption. A number of initiatives have been arisen to
address the issue of e-waste, by promoting reuse of electronic devices and
required that safer alternatives need to be considered for hazardous substances
and also preferred that during the manufacturing of substance material used be
non-hazardous. But now when more of e-waste is already present in environment
and increasing everyday measure has to been taken to get the repair and
refurbishment, worldwide done easily and smoothly. Step need to be taken from a
single book page to expert repair folks in developing countries and make every
possible effort to reuse every part of the device.
Steps need to
be taken to stop throwing the electronics such as computer that can be used by
fixing the 25 percent. Why we are not able to repair? Bad repair big factories,
not able to deal with every different gadget. Difficult is to figure out the
problem of why not able to fix and more likely to decide on replacing machine
instead.
